California has introduced and passed pioneering legislation, (examples are here and here) to protect citizens against a range of cybercrimes. Several new bills have been introduced that seek to protect consumer privacy and stymie ID theft by limiting the use and display of social security numbers by the state, academic institutions, and employers.
