“This paper provides a librarian’s perspective on government publications services in Canadian academic libraries over the past two decades, a period of profound change in libraries. The impact of the internet and online access is examined. The importance of library services for government collections and the critical role of the government publications librarian are discussed. Government policies affecting library access to Canadian government publications and the challenges facing Canada’s Depository Services Program and National Library and Archives are also examined. An overview of the significant challenges facing the Canadian academic librarian providing government information support is presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role of the academic library in preserving and ensuring access to government information.”
