President Bush will send Congress a $51.8 billion emergency supplemental request for Hurricane Katrina response efforts later today. Roughly $50 billion will go to FEMA and $1.4 billion to the Defense Department. About $400 million will be appropriated to the Corps of Engineers for levee and other repairs.
White House spokesperson Scott McClellan told reporters today that the new funding will be directed towards food, water, medicine, and search and rescue activities.
Today's request will follow $10.5 billion in emergency hurricane relief enacted last week, bringing the total requested Katrina response funding to $62.3 billion.
