Now, it’s legal in all 50. The Supreme Court said in a 5-4 ruling Friday that gay couples must be allowed to marry in every state, marking one of the most defining civil-rights cases in its history. Nearly 20 years ago, same-sex marriage was neither banned nor legal in most states. By the early 2000s, most states had legal bans on the practice, and some had constitutional bans. Then came Goodridge v. Department of Public Health in 2003, which legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts and set off a nationwide movement toward marriage equality.
