CBO Testimony on Projecting the Costs to Care for Veterans of U.S. Military Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan

House Veterans Affairs’ Committee Hearing Examines the Long-Term Costs of the Current Conflicts, October 17, 2007: “Since 2001, 1.6 million servicemembers have been deployed. According to the Congressional Budget Office, nearly half of those deployed have separated from the active component or have become eligible for VA care as reservists. One-third of these have sought VA medical care since 2002. In 2008, the number of veterans receiving treatment is expected to rise to 5.8 million, and will include an estimated 263,000 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF).”
