EPIC Comments as Google Bans Facial Recognition Glass Apps

EPIC: “Google announced that it will not approve any facial recognition apps for Google Glass, pending the development of privacy safeguards. “[W]e won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place,” the company said in a blog post. In comments on facial recognition to the Federal Trade Commission last year, EPIC recommended that the Federal Trade Commission enforce Fair Information Practices against commercial actors when collecting, using, or storing facial recognition data. “In the absence of guidelines and legal standards, EPIC recommends a moratorium on the commercial deployment of facial recognition techniques,” EPIC wrote to the FTC in early 2012.
