TRAC – Decline in Voting Civil Rights Lawsuits

“In light of the Supreme Court decision striking down the preclearance provision of the Voting Rights Act, and the announcement by Attorney General Holder that the Department of Justice would aggressively enforce remaining provisions to include “bailing in” the entire State of Texas, it is worth examining recent use of federal civil courts to enforce voting rights. The latest available data from the federal courts show that during June 2013 the government reported just 9 new lawsuits filed under the Civil Rights category of Voting Rights, according to the case-by-case information analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). This represents a drop of 25 percent from the previous month, and 37 percent fewer such cases filed than there were a year ago. For the full report, including a five year timeline and list of recent cases, the link is here.”
