DHS OIG – Major Management Challenges Facing the Department of Homeland Security

Major Management Challenges Facing the Department of Homeland Security, November 2010

  • “In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks against America on September 11th, 2001, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was formed from 22 disparate domestic agencies. The creation of DHS represented one of the largest and most complex restructurings in the federal government. The Department of Homeland Security performs a broad range of activities across a single driving mission to secure America from the entire range of threats that we face. Since its inception, the department has taken aggressive measures to secure our nation’s borders, reform our nation’s immigration laws, and take on the shared responsibility to make our country more ready and resilient in the face of a terrorist threat or a natural disaster. Although the department has taken steps to become “One DHS”; much remains to be done to establish a cohesive, efficient, and effective organization.”
