“The population has more than doubled again since the middle of the 20th century and the population experts are expecting another roughly 3 billion people to be added to the planets population by midcentury. Thats somewhere in the neighborhood of 9 billion people. Heres a sobering factoid: the amount of arable land has not changed for more than half a century. And it isnt likely to increase much in the future because were losing it to urbanization, salinization, and desertification as fast as were adding it.”
