“Artificial intelligence and defense are becoming increasingly intertwined, especially in the US. OpenAI this week announced a $200 million Pentagon contract as part of a project to bring “advanced AI tools to [US] public servants.” In December, the ChatGPT-maker said it was working with the military tech company Anduril, while rival Anthropic is collaborating with another Tolkien-inspired defense firm, Palantir. The tools appear to have logistical applications, but other armed forces have used AI on the battlefield: Israel reportedly relied on an AI-powered database to identify potential targets in Gaza. The importance of AI innovation in defense was underscored by the recruitment of four tech executives, including two from OpenAI, into a new US military reserve detachment last week.”
