Washington Post [and The Hill] – “A new White House webpage presents a “Hall of Shame” for news reports the president disagrees with, coming after the president has voiced personal attacks on female reporters at ABC, CBS, the New York Times and Bloomberg. The White House launched a page on its website Friday devoted to naming and shaming media outlets and reporters that publish stories it disagrees with. “Misleading. Biased. Exposed,” the site reads, naming the Boston Globe, CBS News and the Independent as “media offenders of the week” for allegedly misrepresenting President Donald Trump’s call for six Democratic members of Congress to be hanged for a video saying that military personnel should not follow illegal orders. “The Democrats and Fake News Media subversively implied that President Trump had issued illegal orders to service members,” the site reads. “Every order President Trump has issued has been lawful. It is dangerous for sitting Members of Congress to incite insubordination in the United States’ military, and President Trump called for them to be held accountable.”

This practice raises serious press-freedom concerns, heightens the risk of harassment or harm to reporters and mirrors tactics used by authoritarian governments abroad. It also undermines the respectful, accountable relationship that should exist between the nation’s highest office and the free press. SPJ urges the Administration to remove the page immediately and restore a more constructive, democratic approach to engaging with the media. SPJ also welcomes the opportunity to meet with President Donald Trump or members of his Administration to discuss these concerns and reaffirm the essential role of a free press in our democracy.” Read the full letter embedded in this press release.
