Currently, there are 104 operating nuclear reactors in the United States. This unprecedented growth in operational ISFSIs, coupled with an uncertainty surrounding the fate of a national high-level waste repository, brings NRC’s oversight of ISFSI [Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations] safety to the forefront. NRC’s oversight program for ISFSI safety is designed to prevent radiation-related deaths and illnesses and protect the environment.”
