Trump Strategy Names Antifa Among “Major Types of Terror Groups”

Developer: The Trump administration’s newly released counterterrorism strategy now names “Violent Left-Wing Extremists, including Anarchists and Anti-Fascists” as one of three “major types of terror groups” facing the United States, placing them in the same strategic category list as narcoterrorists, transnational gangs, and legacy Islamist terrorist groups. The document says U.S. counterterrorism activity will prioritize the “rapid identification and neutralization” of what it calls violent secular political groups whose ideology is “anti-American,” “radically pro-transgender,” and anarchist. It also says federal authorities will seek to “map them at home,” identify membership, trace ties to international organizations “like Antifa,” and use law-enforcement tools to “cripple them operationally.” That language is doing a lot of work. Federal law does not have the same clean domestic-terrorist-designation mechanism that exists for foreign terrorist organizations, and antifa has long been described by law enforcement and legal experts as a decentralized movement rather than a traditional group with a membership list, headquarters, or command structure. So the danger here is not just the label. It is the machinery that follows the label: mapping, monitoring, membership theories, international-link hunting, and the inevitable invitation for federal power to treat dissent, protest, and ideology as a battlefield…”
