“In an effort to cover up waste, fraud, and corruption in government, on October 1, the White House shut down websites for at least 28 Offices of the Inspector General (OIGs)—federal government watchdogs that root out waste, fraud, and corruption in the federal government and save taxpayers more than $50 billion every year. By shutting down these websites, the White House has attempted to prevent the American people from having access to reports detailing OIG findings of this Administration’s waste, fraud, and corruption. The White House’s efforts are also a clear attempt to strip whistleblowers of meaningful avenues to report on wrongdoing by the federal government. These actions are a blatant violation of federal law guaranteeing the public’s access to Inspectors General. The White House’s decision to take down these websites is not due to the federal government shutdown. The funding for these websites is separately appropriated and not affected by the shutdown. Instead, it is a deliberate attempt by the Trump Administration to take advantage of confusion caused by the Republican shutdown attack government watchdogs and prevent accountability.
